ABOUT

benn-barham-r3

I began playing golf at Ashford GC at the age of 12 and progressed quickly from an initial 36 handicap to representing Kent Junior, Youth and Senior Teams.  I won the Kent Amateur and Junior Championships in 1994 and the Kent Amateur Championship again in 1996, i decided to turn Professional (handicap plus 1) and completed the PGA qualifications in 2000.
Since then I have played in over 300 European and Challenge Tour tournaments across Europe, Asia and Australasia, winning the NCC Open 2001 and Open Mahou de Madrid in 2005. I have had many top 10 finishes in tournaments whilst playing with many of the great names on some of the most famous courses in world golf.

I have been fortunate to have worked with some of the best coaches including Pete Cowen, Rob Watts, David Whelan, Andrew Nicholson, Mac O’Grady and Matt Belsham and I am now looking forward to passing on the knowledge that I have gained and the expertise to the members and visitors at Kings Hill GC both on the course and the practice ground. Contact the pro shop to book an initial lesson.
Additionally, as a tour professional, I have had the opportunity to play in many corporate and charity golf days, as well as pro-ams. I really enjoy this aspect of my career and will be entering PGA and Charity pro-ams throughout the year. If you would like to experience playing with the pros contact me to check out upcoming events.

During my time as a professional golfer I have been willing to share my experiences with other aspiring golfers of all ages. I think that playing sport at high level combined with traveling around the world is valuable information to pass on. I was also diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2010 and I have found that passing on my experiences relating to this illness is very beneficial for friends and relatives who are going through similar situations.  I have also started to get involved with some local schools as part of their mentoring scheme.

I have decided to use golf as vehicle to raise money for my chosen charities, Demelza Hospice care for Children and The James Whale Fund for Kidney cancer. I have always felt  fortunate to be able to follow my dreams and passions and this has driven me to organise several ongoing charity golf days and other innovative money raising ideas, I see this as an important part of my role as a PGA professional.

I have had a lifelong interest in all types of music. My idea to start DJ-ing was as challenge to my comfort zone and a way of relaxing off the golf course. I decided to learn and apply myself to such a standard that I now DJ House music in bars and clubs in the southeast of England.

Demelza Hospice Care for Children provides respite care, short breaks, symptom control and end of life care for children and young people with life limited and life threatening conditions including those having treatment for cancer. Our philosophy supports looking after families including siblings, by recognising each individual family members needs. We work along side statutory providers in delivering a quality service.

Benn undertakes a lot of work for charity supporting the Demelza House Children’s Hospice in particular. His brainchild of Barham’s Birdie Challenge involves donating a pound for every birdie he makes. In 2008 he managed 245 birdies and five eagles and along with other charity golf days helped to raise £50,000 during the year.
